First, I want to say good job on making Overnight Oats. Not only is it super tasty, but it’s also the healthiest way to get the quickest breakfast early in the morning!
And for those of you that have not tried it out… why?? It’s EASY, HEALTHY AND TASTY! What more could you want? PLEASE DO TRY HAHAHA.
So to make sure you get the most out of it, be sure to avoid these mistakes.
1. USING TOO LITTLE OR TOO MUCH LIQUID
There is a reason why they say balance is everything. And in almost all aspects of life, it stays true – especially making overnight oats!
The liquid referred to is the milk, and if you add too much, your oats will no longer be oats but porridge instead. On the other hand, if you add too little, it’s going to taste too grainy.
So best to stick to the 2:1 ratio – 1 cup of milk : ½ cup of oats. This ensures the right consistency every time!
2. YOU DIDN’T SALT IT LIKE SALT BAE
Ever tried making your overnight oats and it tasted bland like cardboard? Well of course I hope you didn’t, but if you did – next time add salt.
Just a pinch or two is going to bring out so much flavor in your oats.
3. ADDING TOPPINGS TOO EARLY
Ok if you don’t mind having soggy fruit toppings in your oats then this is totally fine. But if you’re expecting it to be all plum with a nice texture, it’s better to add it right before eating your overnight oats instead of adding it the night before.
If you want both, then perhaps add a little bit the night before and the rest right before eating. It creates a unique blend of flavor.
Oh but if we’re talking about chia seeds, then you definitely need to put them the night before. This is because chia seeds will need time to absorb the liquid.
4. YOU LEFT YOUR OVERNIGHT OATS OUT TOO LONG
This is often overlooked but plays an important role. You may end up leaving your jar of oats too long out after preparing it – which is not good at all.
The reason is because pathogens may grow due to the presence of the liquid. You made this in the first place to stay healthy right, so you do not want unnecessary and avoidable issues like this to stand in the way between you and your health.
So be sure to pop ‘em in the fridge right after preparing alright!
5. YOU USED INSTANT OATS
An essential part of overnight oats is the oats itself right. So you want to go for rolled oats. It is going to be super nice to enjoy because of the texture it retains even after adding liquid.
If you stick to quick or instant oats, it’s going to end up really soggy – unless you don’t mind that!
But if you do, then go with rolled oats. Plus, it gives a creamier and chewier texture. YUMMM.
6. YOU PLACED THEM ON THE FRIDGE DOOR
Aiyoo. This is really not a good move.
You see, you’re going to be opening the fridge for what, 3 to 4 times a day? (or more, i won’t judge hahaha) So the milk in your oats could spoil if it is not stored well and exposed to warm temperature.
Make sure to store it in the middle compartment of the fridge or wherever inside as long it is INSIDE not BY THE SIDE LOL.
7. YOU DIDN’T STIR IT BEFORE EATING
You see, you are adding various ingredients and layers to your overnight oats, usually right. So to ensure you get a nicely balanced flavor, you wanna mix them well before taking a spoonful.
Especially for example if you added honey into it, you want to make sure it is well incorporated with the other ingredients to really enjoy the overnight oats.
Just a few stirs will do to get a flavorful, chewy and satisfying mouthful.
