Qatar’s Bedouin roots were displayed on Sunday (November 20) during the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony. As the country’s Emir opened the World Cup, he welcomed football’s biggest event, which is also the first time ever to be held in the Middle East.

“From Qatar, from the Arab world, I welcome everyone to the World Cup 2022,” said Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

“How lovely it is that people can put aside what divides them to celebrate their diversity and what brings them together,” he added. Then, fireworks started to explode from the roof of Al Bayt stadium.

Ghanim Al Muftah, a 20-year-old Quran reciter and FIFA World Cup ambassador, captured the world’s attention with his beautiful and spectacular recitation of verses from the Holy Quran.

“Oh mankind, indeed we have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another,” Ghanim said.

This may be the first time a FIFA World Cup opened with Quranic verses.

Ghanim was born with a rare condition that impairs the development of his lower spice. He appeared alongside Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman. The actor can be seen sitting on the pitch beside Ghanim.

Freeman also narrated the opening segment of the FIFA World Cup 2022’s opening ceremony with the title ‘The Calling’. “We all gather here in one big tribe,” he told the crowds.

“How can so many countries, languages and cultures come together if only one way is accepted?” he added.

“When you call here, we welcome you into our home,” Ghanim said. He was referencing the ‘bayt al sha’ar’ or tent that nomadic bedouins of the Arabian peninsula once used for shelter. The design is what inspired the structure of the stadium.

“I heard something beautiful. Not just music, but also this call to the celebration,” the American actor mentioned.

Freeman said to the crowd, “Football united nations and their love for the beautiful game. What brings together nations also brings together communities.”

After that, he was joined by singers, dancers and past World Cup mascots on the field. Jung Kook, the famous South Korean pop star and a member of BTS, was also one of the performers in the opening ceremony. He performed a song titled “Dreamers” alongside other backup dancers.
