High Tea & Afternoon Tea Desserts

Afternoon tea is great, its at the time of the day in between lunch and dinner when you’re starting to get a little hungry, and want a light snack to have with tea or coffee. If you want to be specific, high tea or afternoon tea is usually around 3.30pm – 5.00pm, assuming you have lunch and dinner at the regular times. The food that are usually eaten during high tea or afternoon tea are cakes, biscuits, pastries, bread and sometimes sandwiches. But of course you can have what you like based on your personal preference. But if you want some recommendations you can read further!

So, what is a good tea time snack? As mentioned above, those are the food that are most commonly eaten during high tea or afternoon tea, but which is the best exactly? Out of that broad range of snacks there are a few that have grown to be a favourite of many. Food like scones, brownies, pies and more are known to be the most popular food for afternoon tea! Here are some desserts recommendations to enjoy during a high tea on a chill, relaxing afternoon. Bake some today and you’ll have a great afternoon tea to enjoy with your family~

Scones

A scone is a baked good, usually made of wheat, or oatmeal with baking powder as a leavening agent and baked on sheet pans. A scone is often slightly sweetened and occasionally glazed with egg wash.

Pie

A pie is a baked dish which is usually made of a pastry dough casing that contains a filling of various sweet or savoury ingredients. Sweet pies may be filled with fruit, nuts, brown sugar or sweetened vegetables. Savoury pies may be filled with meat, eggs and cheese or a mixture of meat and vegetables.

Petit Fours

A petit four is a small bite-sized confectionery or savory appetizer. The name is French, petit four, meaning “small oven”.  Petits fours come in three varieties: Glacé (“glazed”), Salé (“salted”), and Sec (“dry”).

Pâte à Choux

Choux pastry, or pâte à choux, is a delicate pastry dough used in many pastries. It contains only butter, water, flour, and eggs. Instead of a raising agent, it employs high moisture content to create steam during cooking to puff the pastry. 

Opera Cake

Opera cake is a French cake. It is made with layers of almond sponge cake soaked in coffee syrup, layered with ganache and coffee French buttercream, and covered in a chocolate glaze.

Shortbread Cookies

Shortbread is a traditional Scottish biscuit usually made from one part white sugar, two parts butter, and three parts plain wheat flour. Other ingredients such as rice flour or cornflour are often added to alter the texture.

Brownies

A brownie is a square or rectangular chocolate baked confection. Brownies come in a variety of forms and may be either fudgy or cakey, depending on their density. They may include nuts, frosting, cream cheese, chocolate chips, or other ingredients.
