Since the young age of 8, Renee Soliano Tan has been baking for fun. Being born in a family that is family cook oriented, Renee’s has always dreamt of being a pastry chef. Overtime, a hobby has eventually become a side job for her to earn her allowance. Eventually, she has worked in multiple kitchens such as pastries kitchens in hotels that serve high quality, 5 stars dessert. But with time, her creative juices weren’t satisfied with her creation as a hotel pastry chef; she then decided to start Real Sweet Treats.
Growing through hardships
Just like many success stories, Renee has certainly experienced a number of ups and downs. Once falsely accused of not delivering a particularly large order to an address, she has since learned that selecting a great delivery service is crucial in order to keep the tarts safe and arrive at a designated location in time. Renee also believes that stock estimation is one factor that should never be overlooked. Through stock monitoring, you will be more mindful of your purchases, and produce less waste.
With their beautifully handcrafted tarts that are made with high quality ingredients, they have encountered several copyright issues where the picture of their tarts gets stolen by others, claiming it was their own. Bothered by it at first, Renee has since then changed her thinking, saying that “We flattered that our tarts are so beautiful looking that people would purposely steal our pictures and claim it as their own!”
Social Support & Rest is the one thing you never knew you needed
Other than being hardworking, Renee is a firm believer of having a great social support that will celebrate all your small and big wins; and be there when you’re down. “I am grateful for all the support from my family, friends and co-workers; without them, I wouldn’t be as far as I am here today, they are one of the reasons that keep me going.”
“Never underestimate resting,” said Renee. When she’s either feeling burnout or uninspired, taking a rest by going on a vacation or cafe hopping is one of her favourite things to do. By taking a proper rest, she believes that it will rejuvenate not only her energy, but her creative juices as well. “I always feel inspired after I’ve taken a rest, there are so many recipes and designs that I was able to come up with just because I’ve taken a rest I never knew I needed,” Renee added.
Why “Real” Sweet Treats?
Renee stated the name “Real Sweet Treats” was inspired after she has tasted various desserts, and thought that some of them are either overly sweet or are not flavourful enough. She has since aimed to make all her tarts as beautiful, flavourful and authentic; all while not overly sweet. Many customers have the misconception that it’s “Real Sweet Treats” where the tarts may be overly sweet, it is in fact “Real, Sweet Treats” where the tarts taste flavourful and authentic, all while not being overly sweet. Another fun fact is that the name Real Sweet Treats represents herinitials perfectly!
Tarts made with genuine love and passion
“Each tart that we made is with love and passion, we enjoy each and every process of making the tart, from baking to decorating them into beautiful artworks, we could never get enough of the whole process, ” said Renee. She believed that by loving what you do, you’ll be able to produce great results.
With a wide variety of tarts of various different combinations of flavour, it is clear that Renee is someone who enjoys mixing different flavours together and coming up with different, unique flavours. “I dream of studying food science one day,” said Renee with dreamy looking eyes.
We grow through failure
“To any new bakers out there, my one and only advice is to explore more. Never stay in your comfort zone and most importantly, never be afraid of failing at something, take failure as lessons instead.” said Renee when she was asked to give one piece of advice to any new or even ametuer bakers; and we couldn’t have agreed more!
