Bak chang, as known as zongzi or glutinous rice dumpling, is a traditional food of the Chinese community. In this context, bak chang is a festival food during the Dragon Boat Festival. Although it is festival food, some sellers still sell it on normal days. Hence, the customers can buy it whenever they are craving bak chang.

The main ingredient is glutinous rice, and it is wrapped with bamboo leaves. There are different types of bak chang as the different areas have different cultures. The most common one in Malaysia is savoury meat dumplings. However, there are sweet dumplings too. 

What are the types of bak chang?

Other than the most common type of bak chang, which is the savoury Hokkien bak chang made with pork, salted egg yolk, mushroom, and chestnut, there are other types of bak chang too. Kan sui zong is also a famous type, which people will eat with brown sugar or kaya. It is made from glutinous rice that has been treated with lye water.

Other than that, Nyonya dumplings made from blue glutinous rice are also well-known. The blue colour of glutinous rice is not from artificial colours, but from butterfly peas. Last but not least, do not think that bak chang is only for non-vegetarians, as there are vegetarians friendly bak chang in the market.
