Oats are one of the healthiest grains on earth. Oats come in various types but for today, I am going to introduce you to rolled oats. Rolled oats are a type of whole-grain food that has been lightly processed. Traditionally, they are made from de-husked and steamed oat groats, which are then rolled into flat flakes under heavy rollers and stabilised by being lightly toasted.

Oats are appreciated for their nutritional value and health benefits. It contains fibre and minerals such as phosphorus, thiamine, magnesium, or zinc. The main type of soluble fibre in oats is called beta-glucan. Beta-glucan can help to slow down digestion, increase your satiety and suppress your appetite. These characteristics will help you in weight loss. Oats also contain phytoestrogens that can help to reduce chronic inflammation.

The most recommended way to eat oats is by making an overnight oat because the oats can be naturally broken down and more nutrients can be absorbed. Let me give a little guide on how to make an overnight oat.

  • Soaking period: At least 7 to 8 hours before consumption.
  • Shelf life: It can last up to four or five days in the fridge.
  • Base liquid: Milk, water, almond, coconut milk or curd.
  • Extra ingredients: This is totally up to you! You can add bananas, berries, nuts, chia seeds and even peanut butter.
  • Extra flavouring: ‘Ghee’, salt, sugar, and spices. Again, this is also up to your preferences.
  • Storage container: Preferably glass mason jars. It is easy to be sealed and you can see the contents. You can use plastic containers, but make sure it is new or your oats will have your last weeks’ gravy smell that you store in the same container.
